MEMORIAL CUP 2012 OFFICIALLY OPEN
Memorial Cup parade - Shawinigan Hotel de Ville

The sinking of the HMCS Shawinigan in 1944 was the focus of the opening ceremonies for the 2012 Mastercard Memorial Cup.
The strong connection to the military has been increased in recent years due to the Canadian presence in Afghanistan.

The HMCS Shawinigan was protecting passenger boats in the Cabot Straight off the cost of Newfoundland on November 24th, 1944.  German submarines hit the ship and the entire crew of 91 were killed.   Family members of some of the crew were in the audience at the Memorial Cup parade service which took place on the steps of Shawinigan City Hall.
