Monday May 21st - 2012 Memorial Cup

The day began with concerns about the ice at the Centre Bionest.  Canada's foremost ice maker Mike Craig was brought in from Edmonton where the Rexall Place has the reputation of perhaps the best ice surface in the NHL.  The ice in Shawinigan was soft for the first three games resulting in bouncing pucks during play.

Craig immediately ordered plastic taped over each 'sortie'.  The committee also cancelled game day skates at the Centre Bionest and all four teams are now practicing off site.  The ice seemed better in game four as the Saint John Sea Dogs beat Edmonton 5-2.

PEOPLE WATCHING

The Junior Hockey Junkies are here for the 14th consecutive year.  The group of junior hockey fans who attend every Memorial Cup is based in Calgary.  They first attended the Memorial Cup in Ottawa when their Hitmen lost in Ottawa.  'Santa' was handing out Hitmen gear to fans from his sack of toys.  The Hitmen are named after wrestler Brett the Hitman Hart.

Edmonton Oilers president and former Stanley Cup winner Kevin Lowe has two roles here.  He is watching his son Keegan play for the Oil Kings.  He is also scouting draft eligible talent.  Lowe's son is a third round pick of the Carolina Hurricanes.  He plays on the Oil Kings top defensive pairing with Mark Pysyk, a first round pick of the Buffalo Sabres.  Griffin Reinhart and Martin Gernat give the Oil Kings a solid top four defence.  Reinhart is expected to be a top ten NHL pick this year.
